When Korean Traditional Music Meets Classical is a Korean traditional music crossover album that brings together the musical worlds of Korean folk and classical music.

The album is a crossover project by composer and arranger Hanna, who has developed her own distinctive style through reinterpretations of classical works, film and television soundtracks, and other familiar music. Drawing inspiration from beloved Korean folk songs such as Gyeonggi Arirang, Hanobaengnyeon, Ganggangsullae, and Doraji Taryeong, she preserves the emotional character and beauty of the original melodies while reimagining them through new melodies, harmonies, and rhythms.

Korean traditional music and classical music may seem to belong to different worlds, yet both share a timeless ability to express the stories and emotions of human life. At times wistful, at times joyful, and at times gently comforting, the spirit of Korean folk melodies is brought to life through the diverse colors of classical instruments and the distinctive resonance of traditional Korean instruments.

The melodies that carry the spirit and han of the Korean people take on a new musical life as they meet the textures and instrumentation of classical music.

The musicians of Ensemble ONEUL, whose name embodies the meaning “Singing Our Today,” bring their individual voices and sensitive interplay to the album, adding new colors to the sounds of Korean tradition. Just as different instruments come together to create a single piece of music, the ensemble hopes to offer warmth and a sense of connection to everyone living through their own “today.”

We hope these familiar Korean melodies, heard anew, will bring listeners a different kind of comfort and inspiration.
